Firenze

Thursday 13 October

It looked like it was going to be another beautiful day.

This morning Dad cooked poached eggs for breakfast. It's my favourite and we haven't had them since leaving home.

After breakfast we drove to a town called Certaldo and we caught a train to Florence. On the way there we saw this view of San Gimignano.

Florence is a very old city. The Romans first built a town there more than 2000 years ago. Once we got there we stopped for our usual morning coffees and sprite.

We saw a tower where a family live that was built in the 12th century! 'That's old as!'

We wanted to go to the Accademia gallery, but there was a one hour queue to get in and it was very hot and sunny, so we decided not to wait. On the way to find the Duomo dad took photos of little cars and cars in interesting spots.

We walked to a cathedral called Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore. It is a very old (they started building it in 1296) and beautiful building and it has an enormous dome.

We climbed up inside the dome. There were 463 steps to get to the balcony at the top. I got really hot, but luckily there was a cool breeze at the top and the views were amazing! The roofs of all the buildings are all terracotta tiles. The people down below looked like tiny ants.

From inside the cathedral, we saw some beautiful paintings of heaven and angels inside the dome.

There were also some paintings of hell. Some of them were really scary.

Afterwards we looked at the doors of the Baptistry which were made by a man called Ghiberti. It took most of his life to make these doors and another pair.

On the way to the Ponte Vecchio we stooped outside the Uffizi Gallery to look at the statue of David by Michelangelo ( this one is a copy), a fountain of Neptune and lots of other sculptures.

We walked to the Ponto Vecchio. It is a bridge across the river in Florence. It is very old (built in 1345) and it is unusual because it has shops on it. They were very expensive jewelry shops.

It was getting late, so we had dinner at a cafe. I had pizza. Then we walked back through the markets to the railway station.

I saw this cool signs on the way back to the station.

I was very tired by the time we got home and fell fast asleep. Tomorrow we got to Volterra, the oldest existing city in Europe.
